Making Your Very Own Hidden Disability Pins
30th Jun 2025
In our day-to-day lives, we tend to forget how many Australians are living with some kind of disability. According to the most recent comprehensive statistics provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 5.5 million Australians have a disability as of 2022.
While exact statistics related to hidden disabilities are not measured by the ABS, various estimates suggest that 80 to 90% of Australians with disabilities have hidden disabilities. This means that somewhere between 3.96 million and 4.4 million Australians live with a disability that may not be immediately recognisable.
This can lead to a range of challenges as people will either a) not recognise the individual has a disability or b) they won’t believe the individual lives with a disability at all.
At Make Badges, we believe in the power of advocacy and visibility, and custom badges and pins can be an effective means for people with hidden disabilities to indicate to others they may need additional support or accommodations.
Signal Hidden Disability For Support at a Glance
The key purpose of hidden disability pins and badges is to signal that you have a hidden disability without having to regularly explain this to those around you. It also allows those who live with a hidden disability to access support in public places.
There are several designs that are used for hidden disabilities, with the most well-known one being that of a sunflower. Whether it comes in the form of a little pin or badge, it’s a simple but effective way to signify to those around you that you may need some extra consideration and support.
With Make Badges, you can create or order custom badges that match how you prefer to represent and inform others of your disability. It provides a simple, quiet way to communicate your needs in public.
Why Wear a Hidden Disability Pin?
Promote Awareness of Invisible Conditions
Wearing a hidden disability pin, whether symbolised by a sunflower or a design of your own preference, provides a gentle reminder to others that you may need patience and understanding. It also helps inform those who specialise in disability support that you may require their assistance.
Reduce Stress in Public Settings
Another benefit of wearing a hidden disability pin is that it can genuinely help reduce the amount of stress you experience in public. Whether you’re travelling, shopping, attending an event, or working, a hidden disability pin badge can help make interactions smoother for you without the need for you to constantly explain your disability to everyone you encounter.
Encourage Inclusivity
By spreading awareness, sunflower pins and other hidden disability badges encourage more inclusivity. By removing the veil on invisible disabilities and keeping others informed, it drives more awareness, acknowledgement, and respect.
